Job Title: Linguistic Data Reviewers

Job Type: Contract (Part-time, 4-5 hours/day)

Number of Positions: 80 Total Reviewers

Work Arrangement: Remote

Dialect and Location: Central Dialect/Tulama (Finfine/Adama), South-Western/Macca Dialect (Jimma), Southern (Borana-Arsi-Guji) Dialect (Asella/Shashemene), Eastern/Hararghe (Harar) Dialect, Western Oromia/Wollega and Southern Oromia/Borana.

Language: Afaan Oromo

1. Position Summary:

We are seeking organized and detail-oriented High School Afaan Oromo Language Teachers and language students in higher educational institutes to serve as Data Validators. Your primary role is to ensure that every piece of data collected meets our strict quality and linguistic standards. You will ensure that only accurate submissions that follow the guidelines are approved for the project.

2. Key Responsibilities:

  • Review audio submissions to ensure they match the target dialect and the provided guidelines perfectly.

  • Use expert knowledge of Qubee orthography to identify and flag spelling and punctuation errors in contributor text during the review process.

  • Verify that the spoken audio matches the written text exactly.

  • Conduct thorough reviews of text submissions to ensure grammatical correctness and contextual relevance in accordance with Leyu quality standards.

  • Evaluate audio tasks to confirm compliance and alignment with Leyu quality standards.

  • Identify and flag submissions that violate project guidelines or linguistic standards.

  • Provide accurate data annotation for submissions, maintaining accuracy and consistency.

  • Identify and report common mistakes made by contributors to help improve data collection efforts and guide team retraining.

  • Participate in regular feedback and discussion sessions, and compile and submit comprehensive reports.

3. Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Candidates must have strong proficiency in reading and writing Afaan Oromo (Qubee)

  • Proven expertise in at least one Afaan Oromo dialect (Central, South-Western, Western, South Eastern, Eastern or Southern), aligned with the assignment for review tasks.

  • Active High School Teacher (Afaan Oromo) in the targeted location or proven relevant experience in Afaan Oromo language data collection, or Afaan Oromo language students in higher educational institutions.

  • Exceptional ability to spot small errors in spelling, grammar, and audio clarity.

  • Proficiency in using mobile apps or computer platforms for data labeling.

  • Mastery in distinguishing subtle vowel length, gemination, and tonal shifts, and accurately annotating these features in linguistic data.

  • Attention to detail for spotting errors in complex datasets.

  • Proficiency in Google Workspace tools for collaboration, data organization, task tracking, and document management in a professional work environment.

4. Education

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Language Studies or Linguistics in Afaan Oromo

5. Additional Requirements:

  • Must have a functional smartphone or computer capable of reliably running the Leyu web application and a stable internet connection.

  • Strong commitment to teamwork and a collaborative work environment.

  • Willingness to comply with project guidelines, timelines, and ethical standards.

  • 4-5 hours per day commitment and willingness to attend in-person office sessions.
