Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic BI Leadership:
Define and execute the BI roadmap, ensuring alignment with enterprise data strategy and business needs for timely, accurate, and actionable insights.

Architecture and Development Oversight:
Lead the design, development, and enhancement of data pipelines, models, reports, and dashboards across BI platforms, ensuring scalable, reusable, and maintainable solutions.

Operational Excellence & Support:
Ensure high availability, performance tuning, and operational support of BI systems, including monitoring, incident response, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.

Governance & Quality Assurance:
Implement best practices in BI development, including version control, testing (unit/integration), deployment automation, and data quality assurance across the data lifecycle.

Data Integration Leadership:
Oversee the integration of data from multiple sources (e.g., Oracle, APIs, flat files, cloud systems) into the data warehouse, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and consistency.

Agile Delivery Management:
Ensure timely delivery of BI features and projects in line with agile sprints, stakeholder expectations, and business priorities.

Analytics Innovation:
Promote advanced analytics practices including predictive modeling, visualization, self-service BI, and embedded analytics to enhance business decision-making.

Team Management & Development:
Lead, mentor, and grow a team of BI Developers, Data Engineers, and Support Analysts. Foster a culture of ownership, innovation, and continuous learning.

Stakeholder Collaboration:
Work closely with business units (e.g., finance, commercial, operations) to gather requirements, define KPIs, and deliver BI solutions that solve real business problems.

Data Security & Compliance:
Ensure all BI solutions and data practices comply with internal security policies, data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR), and audit standards.

Vendor and Tool Management:
Manage relationships with BI tool vendors (e.g., Microsoft, Tableau, Power BI), ensuring optimal licensing, feature use, and support resolution.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

• University Degree in Computer Science or related technical field.

• 8 years’ experience in a networked and dynamic IT environment at least 5 of those should be as a senior software developer or architecture role.

• 5 years Software development with a bias in frontend and backend development.

• • Certification or training in database administration and application development. E.g. oracle, mysql, PL/SQL, or other no-sql databases.
• • ITIL or ISO training and certification.
• • ITIL training and certification.
• • Training and advanced Experience in scripting and MySQL.
• • Certification or training in architecture or business analysis is an added advantage.
• • Knowledge and experience with No-SQL, BigTable/Columnar data systems, parallel data processing, Software as a Service added advantage.
• • Working knowledge in Unix systems and Databases – Oracle, MySQL.
• • Domain experience in GSM and IT is a must.
• • Broad technical expertise combined with business acumen and strong consulting skills.

• Excellent systems analytical and communication (written and verbal) skills along with meeting facilitation skills.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Must have assumed current Safaricom role for a minimum of 12 months period.
• Employees are strongly advised to discuss their career aspirations with their line managers when they apply for vacant jobs.
• Candidates are eligible to apply for roles at the same level (possible lateral move to another function) or one level higher (next higher immediate level)
• Please be aware that promotions (band increments) may lead to changes in financial rewards. However, lateral moves only result in changes to job title and reporting lines.
• For Regional roles, knowledge of the Region local language is essential
