ABOUT CAMARA EDUCATION

Camara Education is an international NGO whose mission is to transform education through technology to empower disadvantaged learners, particularly those in underserved and rural communities. Founded in Dublin, Ireland, in 2005, Camara currently operates four education hubs across Africa: Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, and Tanzania.

Camara Education Ethiopia delivers digital education solutions to schools and educational institutions throughout the country. Our interventions include Digital Learning Hubs, curriculum-aligned digital learning content, offline AI solutions, teacher professional development, digital and AI skills training, ICT infrastructure support, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation of learning outcomes and digital skills development.

Since partnering with the Federal Ministry of Education in 2011, Camara Ethiopia has installed 81,340 computers in 3,295 schools, trained 21,188 educators, and impacted more than 2.8 million learners.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the supervision of the Technical Manager, the Software Engineer will be part of Camara Ethiopia's Product Development Team. They will design, build, test, and maintain the web, mobile, and offline software products and AI solutions that power Camara's digital education programmes, from learning platforms and offline content systems to data and reporting tools.

Their primary role is product development and AI. They will also take part in training, deployment, and other technical work when programmes need it, such as rolling out new products to schools and Digital Learning Hubs, training staff and teachers to use them, and supporting users in the field. This hands-on exposure keeps products grounded in real classroom conditions, including low connectivity and limited devices.

The role suits a self-directed engineer who enjoys building useful products, is curious about applied AI, and is committed to improving education through technology. The successful candidate will also play a key role in supporting Camara Ethiopia's overall strategic plan.

Note__: The position requires regular collaboration with Camara teams in Ireland, the UK, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia.

  • Design, build, test, and maintain web applications, mobile apps, and offline-capable software for Camara programmes and projects, covering front end, back end, databases, and APIs.
  • Continuously enhance and maintain the Camara Learning Management System (CLMS) and digitise training materials, user guides, and contents.
  • Turn programme, operations, and user needs into clear requirements, user stories, technical designs, and product roadmaps with the Product Development Team.
  • Build products that work in low-connectivity, low-resource school settings (offline-first, lightweight, and compatible with older devices).
  • Write clean, documented, and reusable code, and follow agreed coding standards, version control, and code review practices.
  • Plan and ship regular releases, and manage versions, updates, and bug fixes.

Internal Systems and Operations Tools/Systems (Primary)

  • Design, build, and maintain tools adapted from existing platforms for project management and communications, including activity planning, task and milestone tracking, work plans, and progress dashboards.
  • Enhance and maintain a digital inventory control system for computers, spare parts, and Hub equipment, covering stock levels, asset tracking, refurbishment status, movements between sites, and low-stock alerts.
  • Enhance and maintain our end-to-end digital financial management tools/systems with Finance, covering budgets, requests and approvals, expenses, payment tracking, advance settlements, procurement, reconciliation, and donor/management reporting, with clear audit trails and access controls.
  • Update, maintain, secure, and improve Camara Ethiopia's website, including content updates, performance, backups, and analytics.
  • Build tools/systems needed for day-to-day operations as required, such as HR and leave tracking, reporting forms, and workflow automation.
  • Gather requirements from Finance, Operations, and Programme staff, train users, and provide ongoing support and improvements for Camara systems/tools.
  • Develop digital communication and information materials that raise awareness, strengthen partnerships, and support fundraising.

  • Select, customize, test, and deploy AI models (including locally hosted models), and use techniques such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), prompt design, and fine-tuning where suitable.
  • Evaluate AI outputs for accuracy, curriculum alignment, language quality, bias, and safety for learners, and put safeguards in place.
  • Track AI performance and usage, and recommend improvements or alternative approaches.
  • Keep up with new AI tools and practices, and test those that fit low-connectivity school settings.

Data, Integration, Systems, and Reporting (Primary)

  • Design and maintain databases, data pipelines, and integrations between Camara's platforms, content repositories, and reporting tools.

  • Implement security, access control, backup, and data protection practices, including for learner data and children's information.
  • Automate deployment, monitoring, and maintenance tasks with scripts and tools.
  • Collect and analyse product usage and programme data to measure adoption and impact.
  • Prepare technical reports, product documentation, case studies, and lessons learned for management, donors, and partners.

User Research, Testing, and Quality Assurance (Primary)

  • Plan and run user testing with teachers, learners, and field staff, and turn feedback into prioritised improvements.
  • Test products for functionality, usability, performance, and security before release.
  • Work with programme and content teams so that digital tools align with local curriculum and classroom needs.
  • Document system designs, configurations, user guides, and procedures so work can be handed over and repeated.

Deployment, Technical Support, and Training

  • Deploy and configure software, content, and AI solutions on Digital Learning Hub servers and school devices, including offline update methods.
  • Join field visits for pilots, rollouts, and user testing in assigned regions.
