Engineering Team Lead

The Role

You will lead an engineering team that builds and runs several products at once: healthcare platforms with AI built in, a sports platform, web applications and websites, and the VMware infrastructure they run on. You write code every day, own the team's commitments, make the technical call when the team is split, and raise problems the day they appear, with a plan to fix them.

You will not be the deepest expert in every stack we use. You will understand how the pieces fit, know who the expert is, and make sure a decision gets made and shipped.

The role is remote for now. In a few months we move to a hybrid setup with office time in Addis Ababa as needed, so you should be based in Addis or ready to relocate.

About the Team

We build software for clients in the US and Ethiopia, and for our own ventures: electronic medical records and telehealth with AI features, a sports platform, web applications and websites, and VMware and cloud infrastructure. US healthcare software handles patient data protected by law (HIPAA), so security, access control and audit trails are part of every feature.

What You Will Own

- Delivery: own the plan across every active product with the Product Manager. Run planning, standup, demo and retrospective. Report slippage the day you know it, with a recovery plan. Send a weekly written status to the CEO.

- Code: write code every day. Build features, take on the hardest technical problems, and review code on critical paths (authentication, patient data, payments, AI features).

- Technical leadership: make the call when the team cannot agree, and record it. Own the architecture across products. Find dependencies and integration risks before they become blockers.

- Quality and security: enforce standards for code review, testing, CI/CD, releases and documentation. Real patient data never touches development or staging. Lead incident response and fix root causes.

- AI: guide how AI features are built (model choice, evaluation, cost, privacy) and raise the team's output with AI coding tools.

- Infrastructure: work with our infrastructure engineer on VMware, cloud hosting, backups, monitoring and access.

- People: coach engineers through 1:1s and clear feedback, lead hiring and onboarding, and spread knowledge so no product depends on one person.

- Communication: explain technical tradeoffs in plain language to the CEO, product managers and clients.

Your First 90 Days

- Day 14: a re-baselined plan for every active product, with honest dates and what to cut.

- Day 30: one delivery cadence across all products, a weekly status, a shared definition of done, and automated tests on every main repository.

- Day 60: the next release shipped on the date you committed. Review and testing standards enforced on every merge.

- Day 90: the team meets at least 80 percent of its sprint commitments, and every product has a named technical owner.

What You Bring

- Six or more years building production software, including at least 2 years leading a team of 4 or more engineers.

- Hands-on strength in a modern stack (TypeScript with Node.js and React, or Python), and the ability to review code across others.

- Working knowledge of Linux, virtualization (VMware or similar), containers, cloud hosting, CI/CD and monitoring.

- A project you turned around: work that was late or unstable that you got shipping.

- Agile or Scrum experience, used with judgment.

- Strong English, and confidence working with clients in the US and Ethiopia.

- A degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Strong Advantage

Healthcare software (HIPAA, HL7/FHIR, EMR, telehealth), AI features in production, multi-tenant SaaS, high traffic or real time apps, mobile development (React Native or Flutter), and experience delivering for US or European clients.
